It will be a truly unforgettable experience for you. Exploring these famous tourist spots in Jaisalmer will make it easier for you to understand why it's known as the 'Golden City of India'.

In this short blog, you can learn about the most popular tourist places in Jaisalmer that make the city a timeless jewel of Rajasthan.

1. Jaisalmer Fort – The Living Fort

Jaisalmer Fort, also known by the name Sonar Quila (Golden Fort), is the most famous attraction of Jaisalmer. It is located on the top of the Trikuta Hill, this UNESCO Heritage Site is golden during the sunrise and sunset, resulting in a sight beyond imagination against the desert background.

That’s what makes Jaisalmer Fort special, as it’s one of the few “living forts” in the world, having functioning entities like “shops, residences, temples, and hotels” within it. In the fort, you could walk through “narrow streets, ancient Jain temples with elaborate carvings, and viewpoints with spectacular views of the city.”

2. Patwon Ki Haveli – Architectural Marvel

Patwon Ki Haveli is the largest and most elaborate haveli complex in Jaisalmer. It is one of the excellent photography spots, which was built by a wealthy merchant family. This cluster of five havelis showcases extraordinary craftsmanship in yellow sandstone.

The haveli is known for its finely carved balconies, jharokhas (windows), and detailed facades. Inside this haveli, visitors can see old furniture, paintings, and objects that show the rich lifestyle of merchants in the mediaeval period.

3. Nathmal Ki Haveli – A Fusion of Styles

Another architectural gem, Nathmal Ki Haveli, was built by two architect brothers who worked independently, resulting in slight asymmetry in design. This haveli beautifully blends Rajput and Islamic architectural styles.

The exterior carvings feature elephants, flowers, soldiers, and even European influences like steam engines, reflecting the changing times during its construction.

4. Salim Singh Ki Haveli – The Peacock Haveli

Salim Singh Ki Haveli is famous for its unique roof shaped like a peacock. This Haveli stands independently among the heritage buildings of Jaisalmer. It was established in the early 18th century with 38 beautifully carved balconies, each having a different design.

It is probably one of the most recognizable landmarks in the city, with its curved structure and blue cupola roof.

5. Sam Sand Dunes – Desert Adventure & Culture

A trip to Jaisalmer is not complete without seeing the Sam Sand Dunes, located about 40 km from the city. This is where its Thar Desert magic comes alive. In this tourist place, you can enjoy camel safaris, jeep safaris, traditional Rajasthani folk dance and music, and desert camping under the stars.

Watching the sunset at Sunset Point in Sam Sand Dunes is a breathtaking experience, with orange, red, and golden colors reflecting in the golden sand.

6. Gadisar Lake – A Serene Escape

Gadisar Lake is a peaceful getaway situated outside the boundaries of Jaisalmer. The lake was established by Maharaja Gadsi Singh, and it previously used to be the only source of water for the city of Jaisalmer.

It is surrounded by temples, ghats, and chhatris, the lake is very suitable for boating as well as unwinding, especially during sunrise and sunset. Migratory birds further add on to its charm during the winter season.

7. Kuldhara Village – The Abandoned Mystery

Kuldhada village is an abandoned village in the nearby area of Jaisalmer, with an intriguing history or past that attracts many tourists. The village was once home to the Paliwal Brahmins, who suddenly abandoned this place centuries ago, and many horror tales, legends of curses and hauntings surround it.

While the stories give the place intrigue, it also provides information on ancient urban design and desert living. This is indeed an interesting destination for history lovers and curious travelers.

8. Bada Bagh – Royal Cenotaphs

Bada Bagh is a historic location a few kilometres away from Jaisalmer, famous for its cenotaphs, chhatris, constructed in the memory of the Maharajas of Jaisalmer. It is established in the midst of the desert, giving a serene atmosphere.

Bada Bagh is also a lovely place to visit during sunset time, when the golden light and long shadows create a stunning and memorable view.

9. Desert National Park – Wildlife in the Thar

Desert National Park offers an absolute attraction for all nature lovers, featuring an ecosystem of the Thar Desert in its natural form. It is the home to rare species like the great Indian bustard, desert foxes, chinkaras, and migratory birds.

A part of the park offers jeep safaris and birdwatching as activities. It also gives a different perspective on Jaisalmer beyond forts and havelis.

10. Local Markets – Colors of Jaisalmer

Exploring local markets is one of the most enjoyable experiences in Jaisalmer. This place has many colourful bazaars like Sadar Bazaar, Bhatia Bazaar, and Pansari Bazaar, which are perfect for shopping for traditional handicrafts. These bazaars offer a wide variety of items, including Rajasthani embroidery, camel leather products, jewelry with mirror work, colorful puppets, and traditional textiles.
